So instead of continuing on my current "Nightmare" difficulty playthrough, I instead started a new "Hardcore" character, which means that if at any point I die while playing this character: that's it. The game deletes my character and I have to start all over again. That certainly takes care of the difficulty problem, at least somewhat. It's so strange playing with this overwhelming sense of dread, only to find out that, yes, despite the brutal death penalty, the game is just as easy as before in its early stages. Still, things aren't entirely the same as before: you no longer have a shared gold pile and storage chest with the rest of your characters, so no cheating by giving your hardcore characters your choice findings. It is a bit unusual having a very familiar, but very different experience all because of one or two small differences. I think I like it.
