Fired up some competitive multiplayer and ended up with somewhat mixed results. I found myself enjoying Capture the Flag despite 343's bizzare changes to the rules that essentially render it into an entirely different game mode. Now, flags can be captured without having your own flag at the base and flags can no longer be returned simply by touching them. You must now defend your flag for 30 seconds after you kill the carrier before it returns to base. The net result is a much faster game that tends to exasterbate the inherent problems in CTF: capture loops (where each capture is followed up by another player grabbing the flag) in particular are now much, much easier since flag defense is less important and entire techniques and strategies are rendered invalid with the new rules. Flag defense and offence now feel disparite and the result is far less engaging than traditional CTF. That would all be fine except that as far as I can tell, classic CTF is nowhere to be found. At least Slayer hasn't changed. Big Team Slayer is great fun with long ranges and a bunch of guys running around while I tend to absolutely hate smaller, 4 on 4 Slayer matches mostly because I have trouble whipping around fast enough on the controller to react to anyone who gets past me in close quarters. Domination is hit or miss for me with some matches being quite fun and some just irritating the hell out of me. To be honest, I've never really been much for competitive multiplayer, but every once in a while I do like jumping in for some objective-based play, so I am especially miffed that CTF seems to have been given the boot, but it's a pretty decent time despite that and I'm sure plenty of people will get more enjoyment out of the other modes than I do.
